Support groups and talk-it-out sessions are a great way for individuals to feel encouraged and comforted by those who can truly empathize and without any judgments. I am grateful to the Healing Dove Foundation for allowing me to learn from experts like Mr. Nitin Shah (from ICHARS) and inculcate the qualities of being a good therapist in the future.

Conducting several ‘talk it out sessions’ and ‘support groups’, under supervision, was a wholesome experience. This experience broadened my horizons of general understanding of people’s emotions. Not only did I learn to conduct myself in day-to-day life but this helped me to polish my non-verbal communication skills too. I learned the importance of body language and how to speak, when to speak, and how much to speak. The lesson on being silent was very insightful and I used it during the sessions whenever needed. During this process of learning and practicing, I realized how much human beings are dependent on other people, emotionally. We all need words of encouragement and someone to whom we can go and speak out without any hesitation.

Why should a psychology student conduct ‘talk-it out’ sessions and ‘support groups’?

  1. Conducting these sessions has helped me to gain insights into human emotions and regulate my own emotions.

  2. It helped me to learn from other people’s experiences and understand the depth/intensity of their emotional or other problems.

  3. While researching on the support group’s topic, I learned more about the latest developments in the concerned area, classic theories, and their theorists.

  4. After some practice, I got an idea about which words might trigger the other individual who is expressing himself/herself.

  5. These sessions have proved to be a great networking opportunity and I also got the chance to promote myself to a wider audience. I am confident that it will help me to establish myself as a brand.

  6. Conducting such sessions under the Healing Dove Foundation has also enhanced my resume and I acquired practical skills which will help me in the future, as a therapist.

  7. It was a great opportunity to enhance my communication and public speaking skills.

Conclusion

Conducting talk-it-out sessions and support groups in this internship has proved to be an invaluable experience and I would recommend every psychology student look for internships that provide such opportunities. eft a doubt back.
