Mental Health and Physical Health are two faces of the same coin. It is often overlooked that mental health plays a major role in sustaining one’s well-being. Every person must regularly monitor and provide care for both their mental and physical health. Especially during tough times like we have encountered, where due to a pandemic, the whole world gets plunged into a state of uncertainty, trouble and weakness and calls for every person to stay strong and fight against the virus. The COVID-19 virus has been affecting lives for more than a year now and it’s important to point out that a large population has been fortunate enough to survive the disease and now are focused on improving their health.

People who have suffered from the disease, experience various symptoms affecting their physical health but also there could be other symptoms that could be affecting their mental health in ways one could never imagine.

Research has shown that people in general, battling this pandemic experience stress, anxiety, depression and other forms of psychological issues . Covid-19 on the other hand would have had to face fear, loneliness due to isolation, depression and other forms of psychological issues. So here are some tips that people can inculcate in their daily life to maintain their mental health,

  1. The very first thing is to realize that you are not alone, there are people available to help and there are people just like you who are psychologically affected and it can be treated.

  2. It helped me to learn from other people’s experiences and understand the depth/intensity of their emotional or other problems.

  3. It can be difficult to reach out and share your feelings, take small steps everyday to share how you are feeling to the one person that you trust the most.

  4. There could be stress revolving around getting infected again, understand that by following safety measures you’ll be safe. Meditation helps you to keep yourself calm and composed.

  5. Do regular physical and breathing exercises to tackle any form of anxiety or stress.

  6. Involve yourself in activities that excite you while maintaining safety, distracting yourself could be hard but if you could achieve it, it helps you avoid disturbing thoughts.

  7. Create a time table, and follow it. Having a structured lifestyle will help you feel more involved and keep your thoughts in track. It’s one of the ways to motivate yourself and when you maintain your routine it helps you feel positive and happy.

  8. Avoid checking the news all the time. While news reports make an effort at keeping us informed, it can build fear in us which can have adverse effects.

  9. It’s important to understand that ignoring comments from others on what you are experiencing is vital. People have a difference in opinion and sometimes against reality so it’s best to ignore.

  10. One of the problems that we fail to recognize is that covid survivors are prone to stigmas of coronavirus disease and are seen as someone deadly, people keep their distance saying they have covid and might spread it to them. This can force you into isolation. Try and ignore these stigmas and keep yourself busy and safe during these times.

  11. Always reach out to mental health professionals for help, whether or not you feel disturbed, talk to them to just regularly share your thoughts it will help you keep yourself positive and composed.

While one can use these tips to help them manage their mental health, it cannot be stressed enough that it is ‘always’ essential to seek out a mental health practitioner. They can help us with managing our emotions, thoughts and even help us set goals and guide us throughout the journey.
